A Look At Four Common Canary Diseases

The best way to prevent various canary diseases is to provide a healthy diet and proper living conditions. However, your bird may still get sick at some point in his lifetime. There are a variety of illnesses that can affect your bird. Keep reading to learn about some of the most common canary illnesses.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms usually affect outside birds. They can infect your cat when he ingests an infected insect. Your bird won’t receive nutrients from his food since the worms eat them. As they multiply, they can cause a life-threatening blockage in the digestive tract.

Constipation

Constipation is a less serious condition. Constipated birds experience the same things that we do. It’s characterized by your bird’s inability to pass droppings. A great way to help relieve constipation in canaries is to feed them green vegetables. Watercress and lettuce are particularly popular.

Pox

Canaries can also develop a serious disease known as pox. Pox is caused by a virus that’s transmitted by mosquitoes and wild birds. Birds infected with this virus will develop crusty sores around their eyes, feet, and beak. The tongue, pharynx, and larynx may also develop lesions. There is no cure for this illness, and it’s usually fatal in most cases.

Mites

Your canary can be affected by various types of mites. Your canary may be affected by air sac mites which cause problems with the throat and lungs. Mites can also cause problems with the face, legs, and feet. Some mites burrow into your bird’s feathers. While there, they feed on decaying residue. Canaries infected with red mites will have their blood sucked.
